The Effect of Abuse Experience in Adolescence on Academic Achievements - Mediating Effects of Stress

Abstract
Attempts are made in this article to find if abuse experience of adolescents may impact their academic achievements and mediate their stress. For this purpose, 1,402 adolescents enrolled in the middle and high schools in Chungnam Province and Daejeon Metropolitan City were selected as subjects and the data collected from them were put to analysis of structural model. The main results of the analysis could be summarized as follows: first, abuse experience exercises direct, negative (-) impact upon academic achievements; second, abuse experience exercises direct, positive (+) impact upon stress; third, stress has negative (-) influence upon academic achievements; and fourth, abuse experience acts as mediator for stress by thus the academic achievements. In short, it may be said that abuse experience can not only exercise direct impact upon academic achievements but also exercise negative (-) influence upon stress, intensifying as a consequence academic achievements. Is has therefore become evident that stress exerts partial mediating effects upon the relationship between abuse experience and academic achievements. On the basis of the results from the study, it was discussed how to intervene in prevention of abuse of adolescents and help them academic achievements practically.
